It's no surprise that with the rapidly evolving pace of technology these days, the concept of building something with your own hands has become old fashioned. With internet access, smartphones, desktops, tablets, television, dvd's, the next generation of boys and girls probably could care less about something like welding. The overwhelming sense of accomplishment that comes from the act of building something with your own two hands will most likely never be felt by these young people. And its within that idea I propose to make a change; to hopefully open the eyes and minds of youth to a future full of fulfilment with a career in the trades.
And so I will be offering a "mobile" welding class aimed at persons with little to no welding experience. This class is specifically to try to expose people to the joys of welding, in an easy slow paced style. This introduction will consist of building a 2x3 foot metal dinosaur ( pictures of dinosaur located in products page ) assembled with mig or stick welding Dinosaur pattern is cut with CNC plasma out of steel plate.
Have you ever wondered what it was like to be a blacksmith? Beginners level blacksmithing lessons for 50$/hr. No fancy power hammers just you, an anvil, and a red hot peice of steel. -Class cost: 300$ includes dinosaur
-Duration: Up to four hours
-Two students max.
-No age requirements
-Parent supervision welcome, participation is not
-Requires close toed shoes, jeans and long sleeve shirt
Grab some friends and make some flowers, this is an introductory class aimed at beginners. Learn to forge your own metal flower, all you do is add the heat and shape the flower. All the welding is taken care of ahead of time. You will use small propane torches typically used for soldering copper plumbing pipe, along with an assortment of pliers to bend and twist each of the flowers elements. I demonstrate each step, and the participants follow suit. Up to 3 students at a time, cost is $75 per person. Expect around 2 hours for a class of three.
There are two options for this class. For those out there with acreages, or shop space (industrial/business areas) I can bring the class to you. Assembly can take place indoor or out on the tailgate of my rig truck, weather permitting. The second option is to visit me in West Kelowna, and complete the project there. Students will start by learning the basics of setting up a welding machine, selecting electrodes, and basic hand skills. Then once they are ready, we begin assembly of the dinosaur sculpture. The 44 piece puzzle fits together with slots, and students will get to hands on weld each piece to eventually be left with a finished sculpture. Of coarse you get to keep the dinosaur! And hopefully will end up displayed with pride somewhere. Imagine the joy of saying "I built that" when someone asks about your creation?
